Good Morning!

I hope that you enjoyed your sunny Mother's Day weekend! If you haven't checked out IXL Math yet, try it out this week! Please send me a message if you are having trouble getting started.

Our weekly Zoom meetings will now be every Wednesday at 1pm. The link that I've sent will work for every week! This week students will need to collect three rocks, a pile of twigs, liquid glue (a glue gun would work too), and paper (heavier the better - could also use cardboard or a cereal box). See you then!

Don't forget to take a look at the Morning Routine and Online Resources!

WEEK SIX
Sight Words  could, let, them, after, has
Print or make your own sight word flashcards. Post them on the fridge, a door, or somewhere your child will see them. The key is repetition through the week.

Reading
This month our focus is Elements of a Story, which ties in to the Grade One Writing curriculum. Please see right sidebar with reading group names. Your child will know their reading group. You should spend about 20 minutes per day on a lesson, in addition to the 20 minutes per day that your child reads independently.

Writing
This week, I would like students to practice opinion writing. The layout of the page should look like this:

My Opinion About Bugs
I do/do not like bugs. Let me tell you why.
Reason 1:
Reason 2:
Reason 3:
I think bugs are___________.

Math
I have set up a class account for IXL Math. You can use this program at home for additional math practice. As of now, I only have a one month trial and I'm not sure if we will continue through June. Your login information has been emailed to you.

Please remember the most valuable part of your teaching will be the discussion and hands on practice with your child.

JUMP Math
Monday: 94
Tuesday: 95-97
Wednesday: 98-102
Thursday: 103-104
Friday: review, complete unfinished pages, work on the beginning of the book.

Mindfulness
Mindful Steps
This activity is best completed outdoors and if suitable, you may like to walk barefoot.
Give your child a clear boundary for where they can walk during this activity.
Your child will select a small area where they can walk in a line for about 5 or 6 steps and back then back to where they started without getting into another person’s way.
Begin this practice with three deep breaths.
Take 5 or 6 steps in one direction, turn slowly and then take 5 or 6 steps back to where you started.
While walking, bring their awareness to their breath and their body.
– What does the ground feel like under your feet?
– Which part of your foot touches the ground first when you take a step?
– Does your body feel heavy or light today?
– Are you slouching when you walk?
– Or, is your back up quite straight?
– Try not to change the way you walk, but instead just notice how your body naturally moves.

Author of the Month
Our Author for the month of May is Drew Daywalt. Here is the author reading his own book, The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors!

Art Project
Make a house collage for your weekly art project. Recycled materials would work very well for this!

Fun Activities
1. Do some fun movement outside! When your child practices skipping, hopping, galloping and side-stepping, he or she will be building coordination and endurance skills.
2. Does it sink or float? Grab a bucket of water and ask your child to make predictions about what objects will sink or float. Have them test the objects and then classify them on paper.
