Good Morning!

Check out the amazing robot drawings that I have received so far! It is great to see everyone's creativity shine. Also, don't forget about Mr. Laws' music blog (link on the right), he posts lessons every week and is sharing some very exciting news!

Good Morning!

It was so nice to see so many students on Zoom again yesterday! I can't wait to see pictures of everyone's robot drawings. If you missed our meeting, you can still do the activity and send me a picture! Just watch the my video on YouTube (below). It was filmed by a 4 year old, so keep that in mind 🤪 Don't forget to add your name in big letters, so everyone will know who made your art.

Good Morning!

Our class Zoom meeting is today at 1pm. I hope that you can join us with a pencil, paper, colouring tools, and a black marker.

Math
Hands On Activity:

Subtraction LEGO Game
You will need 10 legos per person and dice.
The object of the game is to see who can lose all of their bricks first!

First, stack up your tower. Then, roll the dice.
Take off that number of bricks, and then count how many you have left. Work with your child by talking through the math language. For example: “I had 10 bricks, I took off 2, and now I have 8.”
You could even have them write equations for each roll to extend the learning! In class, we called them subtraction sentences.
Keep rolling and removing bricks until there are none left. The first person to unstack them all is the winner!
Play again, or increase the number for a longer game!

Monday, April 27th

Good Morning!

I hope that you had a great weekend. Last week's Show and Tell Zoom was so much fun! Tomorrow we are going to Zoom at 1pm and do an art project together. You will need paper, a pencil, colouring tools, and a black marker.

I'd also just like to note that I know all of this work can be overwhelming, but if I could recommend one thing that will make the biggest difference, it's the Reading links that I'm posting! If you are unsure of how to get started, just send me a message! Reading is our first priority in grade one!

Don't forget to take a look at the Morning Routine and Online Resources!

WEEK FOUR
Sight Words  an, may, think, of, from
Print or make your own sight word flashcards. Post them on the fridge, a door, or somewhere your child will see them. The key is repetition through the week.

Reading
This month our focus is Community, which ties in to the Grade One Social Studies curriculum. Please see right sidebar with reading group names. Your child will know their reading group. You should spend about 20 minutes per day on a lesson, in addition to the 20 minutes per day that your child reads independently.

Writing
This week we are writing letters to essential service workers! You can write to someone you know, or send it to the hospital, police, station, grocery store, or anywhere else that you would like. I've included two options to help plan your writing. Some students will do their best with option 1, and students who would like to write a bit more will appreciate option 2. I'd love to read the letters before they are sent!

Writing Option 1
Math
Please remember the most valuable part of your teaching will be the discussion and hands on practice with your child.

JUMP Math
Monday: 72-75
Tuesday: 76-78
Wednesday: 79-81
Thursday: 82
Friday: review, complete unfinished pages, work on the beginning of the book.

Mindful Monday
Breathing Hands
  1. Spread one hand out like a star.
  2. Use the index finger on your other hand to trace the outline of your star hand.
  3. Take a deep breath in as you move to the top of your thumb.
  4. Breathe out as you move down between your thumb and first finger.
  5. Take another breath in as you move to the top of your first finger.
  6. Breathe out as you move down between your first and second finger.
  7. Repeat until you have taken five slow, deep breaths.
Fun Activity
Bug Hunting
Take some time to observe the bugs in your backyard with your child and get up close and personal with a magnifying glass (if you have one!). Talk to your child about what colors they are, how they protect themselves (do they sting?), and how they work together to build a home (an ant hill is a great example of an insect colony.)

Hello everyone,

I hope you are all well and are enjoying tracking the moon cycles in your moon books! How did your acrostic poems go? I’d love to see. Email me at jessilee.schaff@sd78.bc.ca.

This week we are going to start two projects. The first is a research project on an animal and the second is a poetry project.

Science
Your mission today is to:
1. Choose an animal you want to study.
2. Describe what your animal looks like. (You might need an adult or older sibling to help you write down your facts and to stay organized.) Write down or type 3-5 details in a note book, computer or on a piece of paper. *Keep these facts handy as our project will build from week to week and in the end, you will have a completed project!

For today’s work, for example, if I had chosen a raccoon, I could say:

What do raccoons look like?
1. Raccoons have grey and black fur with a black ‘mask’ around their eyes.
2. Raccoons have small paws and the front paws look like little hands.
3. Raccoons have a small round black nose and whiskers.
4. Raccoons have a bushy tail that is striped.
5. Raccoons have sharp teeth.

Poetry
Along with your acrostic poem, our project is going to be creating a poetry book. It’ll be a collection of poems you get to create! This week we are making a calligram. You will draw a simple flower and line it with related words. Check out my example below! Once you’re done, you can colour your flower and add details into the background. I chose to add a sun, cloud and ladybug. Other ideas could be a bumble bee, kite, dragon fly, ant, or even a pot or vase for your flower. Use your imaginations and have fun!

Math
Some math fun today - go out and collect around 20 rocks. Paint them to look like the earth. Quiz your child on single digit addition and subtraction, they can use the rocks as counters. Bonus, they can continue to reuse the colourful counters or use them to decorate the garden.

ADST
Today for ADST, I would like you to make a robot, using only recycled materials from your home. I can't wait to see the pictures! Use this blog as inspiration.

Good Morning!

I hope that you had a great weekend. Were you able to watch my video of the salt art? Tomorrow we are going to have a class Zoom meeting at 12:30. We are going to do Show and Tell together! I would love to see more pictures of your child's learning. I would also love to share some pictures of your child learning and their projects on the website. If you send me a picture, just let me know if it is private or if it is ok to share on the website. Please note that this website is not protected, and visible to everyone on the internet.

Wednesday is Earth Day. Talk to your kids about how they can help out their community on Earth Day (i.e. picking up litter, recycling at home) and write 3-4 sentences together. I've included optional worksheets, but it would be even easier to do your writing in the journals that I provided. Don't forget to use the Writing duotang to help with independent writing!

Friday, April 17th

Good morning students, parents and guardians,

I hope you are all well. This week we are going to do two activities. One that is Science related and one that is Poetry related.

1. Science: We are going to start learning what is in our skies. What natural things can you think of? What man-made things can you think of? Have a discussion together. Natural things: The Sun, the Moon, stars, meteors, shooting stars, planets, dwarf planets, black holes, Milky Way Galaxy, and other solar systems. Man-made things could include: planes, helicopters, rocket ships, space stations, drones, hot air balloons and satellites. These lists are ideas, but don’t feel like you have to explain each one at length.

We are going to start a moon phases tracker book so we can discover the different phases of the moon. Each day, I would like you to draw a picture of what the moon looks like in the night sky and write the title of the moon type under it. You can create a chart, use a calendar print out or create your own Moon Phases book. Here is a link to a printable calendar, if you choose to go that way. Printable Calendar. This project will be ongoing for one entire moon cycle. Here is a helpful link that might help! Chilliwack Moon Phases. *Note the Crescent/gibbous moon phases are not listed here. I also posted pictures of the expected moon cycle from the Farmer’s Almanac.

Here is a sample of what a Moon Observation Book could look like:

2. Poetry. The first poem we are going to create is an acrostic poem. In this type of poem, you use a word as a frame and use each letter in that word to attach other words to it. I chose to use the word ‘Spring’ as my frame word, but you can chose any word that makes sense to you.

For example:

Please use whatever supplies you have on hand. :) I’ve seen the most beautiful work using recycling! Feel free to improvise and use your imaginations.
