Good Morning!

Good morning families. I hope you’re all adjusting to the new Friday routine. :-) Today we will have our first Zoom lesson today at 1 pm. You will need a piece of paper, one pack of markers/pencil crayons/crayons, and one pencil.

WEEK TEN
Sight Words  were, give, old, going
Print or make your own sight word flashcards. Post them on the fridge, a door, or somewhere your child will see them. The key is repetition through the week.

Reading 
This month our focus is Living Things and Their Environments, which ties in to the Grade One Science curriculum. Please see right sidebar with reading group names. Your child will know their reading group. You should spend about 20 minutes per day on a lesson, in addition to the 20 minutes per day that your child reads independently. 

Writing 
This week we are continuing out work with simple stories. We are following last weeks outline again, but this time, we are going to add some interesting details. 

Stories have several components. 1. At least one character. 2. A setting (Where the story takes place.) 3. A beginning, middle (Story Problem) and end (Resolution to the problem).  

Please find an outline below.

This is a story about ___________________________________. (A character) 
This story takes place __________________________________. (A setting) 
In the beginning ______________________________________. (The beginning of the story)
Then suddenly ________________________________________. (The middle and story problem)
In the end, ___________________________________________. (Story ending/problem resolution)

For example:
This is a story about a young boy named Gabriel. Gabriel is three years old, he has curly hair and loves playing with Transformers. This story takes place in Value Village. Value Village is a thrift store. In the beginning, Gabriel and his mother set out in their car to Value Village in the hopes of finding a new Transformer. They liked hunting for toys. Then suddenly, after just minutes of shopping, they found two! This was a problem because Gabriel had to choose one. It was hard for Gabriel to decide! In the end, Gabriel promised to donate some of his old toys in exchange for both Transformers! It was his lucky day! 

Here is a story written by Alex! Well done with your great story!! 
There once was a dog named Hip. He was funny but they called Hip, Stop ripping the book! He liked to pay hide and seek but he couldn’t! And he liked Cokes. Hip found a Pez and is a good boy! 

Math
I have set up a class account for IXL Math. You can use this program at home for additional math practice. Your login information has been emailed to you.

Please remember the most valuable part of your teaching will be the discussion and hands on practice with your child.

Friday: review, complete unfinished pages, work on the beginning of the book.

Mindfullness
We are going on a safari! Today is all about going outside slowly, quietly and looking for all the little details of things that are happening around you. Pick up a rock and feel how smooth or rough it is. Is it heavy? Look at it, notice the colours. Look around more. What do you see? Do you notice any smells? How does the weather feel on your body? Can you see any bugs? What are they doing? Watch them for a few minutes. I once watched a spider build it’s web and it was fascinating! Slowly move around looking, smelling and touching the world around you. What did you like discovering the most? 

Author of the Month
Robert Munsch is our Author of the Month. He is a very famous author! This week we are listening to Smelly Socks. Have you ever had a new item of clothing that you loved very much? So much so that you didn’t want to take it off? Tina, the character in the story get’s a new pair of socks and you can only imagine the fun that takes place. Enjoy! 





Art Project

This week, you are going to design and create your very own special socks from Smelly Socks. 



Fun Activities

1. Orally retell the story of Smelly Socks to someone. You could even make a video! Try to include as many details as possible and do your best to go in the right order.
2. Orally retell the story with a different piece of clothing with a different problem. For example, a shirt with holes in it, a hat that is losing it’s thread, shoes that are too small etc!
3. See if you can find a special rock. It might be special because of it’s shape. Maybe it glitters. Maybe it has a stripe you like.  (I would love a picture of this!)
