Monday, May 4th

Good Morning!

I hope you had a great weekend! I am making a few blog changes this month. I will be posting the lessons and information for the week every Monday, and Miss. Schaff will continue to post on Fridays. I am also going to set Wednesday as our weekly Zoom day. Watch your email for your next invitation!

Don't forget to take a look at the Morning Routine and Online Resources!

WEEK FIVE
Sight Words  take, know, by, just, thank
Print or make your own sight word flashcards. Post them on the fridge, a door, or somewhere your child will see them. The key is repetition through the week.

Reading
This month our focus is Elements of a Story, which ties in to the Grade One Writing curriculum. Please see right sidebar with reading group names. Your child will know their reading group. You should spend about 20 minutes per day on a lesson, in addition to the 20 minutes per day that your child reads independently.

Writing
This week I have assigned Goldilocks and the Three Bears on Raz-Kids. Students will be able to listen to the story, but it will be too difficult to read independently. Once they have listened to the story, they will be ready to try these writing activities!

Writing 1 - use key words to create sentences
Writing 2 - use the picture as a writing prompt

Math

I have set up a class account for IXL Math. You can use this program at home for additional math practice. As of now, I only have a one month trial and I'm not sure if we will continue through June.

Please remember the most valuable part of your teaching will be the discussion and hands on practice with your child.

JUMP Math
Monday: 83-84
Tuesday: 85
Wednesday: 86-92
Thursday: 93
Friday: review, complete unfinished pages, work on the beginning of the book.

Mindfulness
Breathing Colours
This activity is similar to the first mindful breathing activity, however it uses visualising colours as a means to increase focus and awareness.

Ask students to think of a relaxing colour. It can be any colour they like, as long as it is one that makes them think of relaxation.
Ask students to think of a colour that represents stress, sadness or anger. Whichever of those emotions is most relevant or suitable for your child to explore.
Students imagine breathing in the relaxing colour and visualise it filling their lungs.
Students then imagine breathing out the stress, sadness or anger colour.

Your spoken instructions may be along these lines:
Imagine you are surrounded by the relaxing colour. No longer is the air clear, it is the relaxing colour.
You can still make out shapes, but your world is now a different colour.
Imagine that as you breathe in, you breathe in this colour too.
See the colour filling up your lungs.
Imagine as you breathe out, that your breath is the colour of stress.
See the stress colour mix into the relaxing colour around you. Watch the stress colour slowly disappear.
Breath in your relaxing colour.
Breath out your stress colour.

Fun Activities
1. Make your own calming jar! You can add small objects, glitter, the possibilities are endless!
2. Blow some bubbles! If you don't have any at home, you can make some using dish soap! Here is how to make a DIY bubble wand....if you do not have a pipe cleaner, what else could you twist to make a bubble wand?
